Gum Disease (or Periodontal Disease) is the most common infectious disease in the world.

Gum Disease is an inflammatory disease of gum and supportive tissue surrounding the teeth caused by bacterial infection and if it is left untreated can lead to tooth loss.

Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease. It is a reversible inflammation of the gums mainly caused by plaque irritation. If left untreated, Gingivitis can progress into periodontitis.

Periodontitis
Periodontitis is an advanced stage of gum disease affecting the supporting structure of the tooth. This leads to development of periodontal or gingival pockets that plaque and tartar further accumulate. If still left untreated, the bone that holds the tooth in place will also be gradually destroyed resulting in tooth loss.

Signs and Symptoms
Gum Disease has often been labelled the 'silent disease' due to the fact that most people are unaware they have it. Many patients only become aware of their symptoms once the disease is advanced. By recognising the early signs of gum disease, you can avoid further deterioration of the gums and bone and prevent tooth loss. The early symptoms of Gum Disease include:

• Change in gum colour from pale pink to deep redness
• Round swollen gum margin
• Bleeding gums
• Bad breath
