A dental examination is the process often referred to as a check-up. Regular dental examinations are very important and help you to maintain a healthy mouth. Even if you take excellent care of your teeth and gums at home, you still need to see your dentist regularly. The process allows the dentist to check for early signs of dental problems that you may not see or feel, such as decay or gum disease, oral cancer and therefore take measures to prevent the problems from becoming serious. Leaving problems untreated could make them more difficult to treat in the future, so it's best to deal with problems early, or, if possible, prevent them altogether. This could save a lot of pain, time and money!  

The time between check-ups can vary from three months to two years depending on how healthy your teeth and gums are and your risk of future problems.On average, seeing a dentist twice a year works well for most people. A few people can get away with fewer visits. Others may need more frequent visits. People with very little risk of cavities or gum disease can do fine seeing their dentist just once a year. People with a high risk of dental disease might need to visit every three or four months, or more. This high-risk group includes: Smokers, Diabetics, People with current gum disease, and People with a weak immune response, People who tend to get cavities or build up plaque.
